One of the downsides of turf is it can collect smell, especially if you have pets but fear not, there are ways to get rid of the smell!
Turf can develop unpleasant odors over time, especially in areas where pets urinate or debris collects. Here’s how to get rid of turf smell and keep it fresh:
???? 1. Rinse Regularly
- Use a garden hose to rinse down the turf at least once a week, or more often if pets use it for potty breaks.
- This helps wash away residues before they can build up.
???? 2. Use Turf Deodorizers
- Pet-safe turf deodorizing products (like enzyme cleaners) break down urine and bacteria rather than just masking the smell.
- Products like Simple Green Outdoor Odor Eliminator, or artificial turf deodorizers from pet stores, work well.
????️ 3. Improve Drainage
- If you have standing water or slow drainage under your turf, odors can linger.
- Make sure your base layer drains properly; you may need to add more infill or adjust the grading to improve drainage.
???? 4. Deep Clean Periodically
- Mix equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle, apply to smelly spots, then rinse after 10–15 minutes.
- Or use a mild detergent with warm water for a gentle scrub.
???? 5. Clean Up Pet Waste Promptly
- Remove solid waste as soon as possible
- Rinse the area right away to keep urine from soaking in
- Train pets to use a designated potty area if possible
???? 6. Brush and Aerate the Turf
- Use a turf rake or stiff broom to brush up the fibers
- Helps air circulate and prevents bacteria and mold buildup under matted areas
☀️ 7. Let It Dry
- Sunlight is a natural disinfectant
- After rinsing, let the turf dry completely to keep mold and mildew away
If the smell persists even after thorough cleaning, it could indicate a problem with the turf’s drainage system or infill material — in that case, replacing the infill with a zeolite-based infill (odor-absorbing mineral) is a great option.
