What shots should my puppy get?

When it comes to your puppy’s health, vaccinations are essential. Below is a breakdown of what shots most puppies need — these are guidelines and your veterinarian will tailor the schedule for your puppy’s breed, lifestyle, and local disease risks.

🐶 Core Vaccines (Recommended for All Puppies)

  • DA2PP (also called DHPP or DAPP) – Protects against Distemper, Adenovirus (Hepatitis), Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza. These are highly contagious and potentially deadly diseases.
  • Rabies – Required by law in most areas. Rabies is fatal and is transmissible to humans, making this vaccine critical.

🌍 Non-Core (Lifestyle) Vaccines

Depending on your puppy’s environment, lifestyle, and risk exposure, the vet may recommend additional vaccines:

  • Bordetella (Kennel Cough) – Especially important if your puppy will be in daycare, boarding, or around many other dogs.
  • Leptospirosis – A bacterial infection often found in soil or standing water, which dogs can pick up outdoors.
  • Canine Influenza (Dog Flu) – Recommended if your puppy may be exposed to other dogs in group settings.
  • Lyme Disease – Recommended in areas with high tick prevalence or if your puppy will be in wooded/outdoor areas.

📆 Typical Puppy Shot Schedule

  • 6–8 weeks old: First DA2PP vaccine begins.
  • 10–12 weeks old: Second DA2PP and possibly first dose of lifestyle vaccines.
  • 14–16 weeks old: Final puppy DA2PP, plus Rabies vaccine and any remaining lifestyle vaccines.
  • After the puppy series, adult booster shots will follow and the timing depends on your dog’s health, local laws, and lifestyle.

Bottom Line: Talk to your veterinarian early (ideally when you bring your puppy home) to set up a vaccination plan. These shots help protect your puppy from serious, preventable diseases and give them the best start for a long, healthy life.
